Chapter Seven

Everything is Quiet Until

I try to follow Dusty’s shadow with my gaze, but it’s so dark that I can only see him when the moon comes out from behind the clouds.

A twig snaps.

The four of us freeze. We are all here, so who could it be?

Rose turns. Her mouth opens in a scream, but no noise comes out.

We duck in the tall grass, holding our wings close to our bodies.

“Psst.”

I jump, knocking Rose over.

“Psst, Thistle. It’s me, Weedy.”

I can’t believe it when I see Weedy step out in the open.

“What are you doing here?” I whisper when I really want to shout. Weedy could have ruined the stakeout.

“Well,” Weedy says, “I hated being left out of the stakeout, so I hid at the library. I followed you fairies when you walked into the woods, staying far back. Then you split up and I stayed, hiding behind Rose.”

“You hid behind me?” Rose looks over her shoulder to see if anyone else is hiding behind her.

Weedy continues her story, “I got bored, so I moved closer to the abandoned house. I figured that was where you went, and that’s when I stepped on Needles.”

My jaw drops. “You stepped on Needles?”

“Yeah, I—”

“Shh.” Lacey interrupts Weedy. Her pointy ears twitch. “Something’s moving.”

We stand still. Who else could possibly be out here?

“Thistle?”

I breathe a sigh of relief. It’s Dusty.

“Over here,” I whisper.

Dusty bangs right into me and catches me before I can topple over.

“Oops, sorry.” He glances at each one of us and then notices Weedy. “Weedy?”

“She followed us,” I tell him. “And then she stepped on Needles.”

Weedy speaks softly. “I asked Needles why he was here. He said he was the lookout.”

“Lookout for what?” Dusty scratches his head and messes up his curls even more.

“He didn’t say. He was acting nervous, looking all around and squirming.”

He’s not the only one who is nervous. I am, too. “What did you tell him about why you were in the woods?” I ask Weedy.

“I told him I had returned books in the after-hours slot at the library. Then I saw a group of ladybugs, so I followed them.” She folds her arms, satisfied with her answer.

I raise my eyebrows. “And he believed you?”

“You know Needles. He’ll believe any story you tell him. Just like Moss.”

Moss lowers his head.

“Sorry about that, Moss,” Weedy says.

Dusty shifts from one foot to the other. “Where did Needles go?”

“He zipped to the abandoned house. He went so fast I couldn’t keep up. He didn’t know I was following, but he kept doing crazy loops and taking detours around trees just in case.” She bends down to brush the dirt from her scraped knees.

I look to Dusty, the real detective of the group. “What do we do now?”

“Well, I saw a shadow inside the house, but I couldn’t see who it was. At first, it scared me. Now that Needles is here, I bet it’s Viner. I just can’t figure what they are up to.”

Neither can I.
